It’s not uncommon for someone to be told to limit their sodium intake if they want to lose weight. People seem to fear sodium, but it’s actually extremely important for you body! In fact, low sodium can not only hinder your progress but it’s also a bad idea for your overall health.
_
Sodium is an electrolyte that plays a crucial role in your body’s ability to maintain a proper fluid and electrolyte balance.
_
Most people who exercise often usually drink a lot of water. High water intake paired with low sodium is not a good idea because it throws off the fluid and electrolyte balance. If you increase water intake, sodium intake will need to be increased as well!
_
Here are a few benefits of proper sodium intake:
_
✅ Sodium helps regulate fluid exchange throughout the body. Because of this, it helps mediate nutrient delivery into cells, as well as waste products out of cells. These two processes are crucial for maximizing your recovery!
_
✅ Sodium is very important in allowing you nervous system to communicate with your muscles to make them contract. Inadequate sodium can limit the contractile ability of your muscles, mean your exercise performance will be decreased.
_
✅ Aside from your muscular system, the nervous system controls all the other systems in your body, and relies on sodium to help do its job. Inadequate sodium intake can have a negative impact on your nervous system, which means other processes in your body will be affected as well.
_
It’s hard to recommend an exact sodium intake for people because it vary depending on activity level, water intake, how much you sweat, and your climate. If you tend to sweat more one day, due to more exercise or hot weather, you’ll need more water, which means you’ll also need more sodium.
_
For these reason I always recommend moderate amounts throughout the day. I typically drink water consistently throughout the day so I like to make sure I’m getting some sodium in each of my meals.

Don’t be afraid of salt friends!💛
